Kelvin T. Erickson is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). He has taught university courses in factory automation and PLC programming since 1991. He has taught short courses on PLC programming for engineers, technicians, and maintenance workers.
Dr. Erickson teaches three one-semester courses that cover programmable logic controllers. The first semester emphasizes ladder logic programming and has approximately 50 enrolled juniors or seniors for both the fall and spring semesters. The second semester course covers the other programming languages, communication, and a class-wide project. This course is offered once per year and is taken by about 30 seniors or graduate students each year. The third course covers PLC motion control and emphasizes the use of servo motors and drives in applications such as packaging machines and robotics.
Dr. Erickson received his BSEE from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science & Technology, Missouri S&T) in 1978. He completed his MSEE from the same institution in 1979. He joined Fisher Controls as a design engineer in 1979. He took a two-year leave of absence from Fisher Controls to complete his PhD. He received his PhD in EE from Iowa State University in 1983. He continued to work at Fisher Controls until July 1986 when he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri-Rolla. In 1997, he spent a sabbatical working for Magnum Technologies, a consulting firm, programming PLCs.
In addition to the two PLC texts, he co-authored Plantwide Process Control with John Hedrick which was published in 1999 by Wiley and Sons. His current research interests are in manufacturing automation, process control, and control system security.
Esther A. Erickson is a senior application engineer with NTI AG, LinMot & MagSpring in Spreitenbach, Switzerland. Prior to joining LinMot, she had 19 years experience as a field service engineer and a senior application engineer with Rockwell Automation in Aarau, Switzerland with primary responsibility in motion control, PLC programming, and machine networks. She also was a control system integrator engineer with Alstom, working in their power plant gas turbine division. She received her BSEE degree from University of Missouri-Rolla.
